Lothian buses, the largest municipal bus company in the UK, is looking for apprentices to join their award-winning engineering team!

The apprenticeship programme is open to anyone aged 16-19 with an interest in starting a career and gaining a recognised qualification in the motor industry.

At Lothian, a huge part of its Modern Apprenticeship Programme focusses on practical, hands-on learning in a garage environment, allowing trainees to gain key skills from colleagues and mentors. With the help of GTG Training, the four-year training course offers not only a Scottish Vocational Qualification, but also technical support from manufacturing specialists.

As part of our fleet replacement strategy, Lothian has invested heavily in the latest technology to ensure it provides an efficient, comfortable, and accessible bus service. Over the last 10 years, Lothian has removed over 12,000 tonnes of CO2, 50 tonnes of NOx and 280kg of particulate matter from our operations. You will be working with these strategies, exploring new innovations, and working with new technologies, making this an exciting time to join the industry!

What Might a Typical Day in this Job look like?

Through the Modern Apprenticeship, you will train in all aspects of Bus & Coach Repair and Maintenance including vehicle servicing, MOT preparation, removal, replacement and overhaul of major components and electrical fault diagnostics.

The programme covers the following areas:

  • Practical hands-on learning in a garage environment working on new and evolving technology
  • Gaining technical skills to help maintain a fast-advancing fleet
  • Carrying out inspections, servicing and MOT’s on a range of vehicle types
  • Diagnosing and repairing electrical and mechanical faults in both bus and coach systems and components
  • Carrying out scheduled electrical and mechanical maintenance on buses and coaches
  • Contributing to safe working practices in Bus/Coach Engineering and Maintenance
  • Using the latest workshop materials and equipment
  • And much more!

 

What will I learn?

Regular assessment and reviews will be undertaken within the apprentice's own workplace which aims to ensure they have the required skills to successfully complete their apprenticeship.

You will train through GTG to SCQF Level 6 in Bus & Coach Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Maintenance.

 

What qualifications or qualities are required?

Minimum requirements for this apprenticeship are National 4 or above in Maths, English and a Science or Technical subject.

It is essential that you are literate, numerate, reliable, and keen to learn. We are looking for apprentices who are ready to start their career within this exciting industry.
